Jean-Paul Clozel - CEO, Founder, Member of the Board, and the Actelion Executive Committee

Jean-Paul Clozel is a cardiologist educated in France, with further training in pharmacology and physiology at the University of Montreal, Canada, and the University of California, San Francisco. After eleven years as a clinician, he decided to move to applied research. During his 12 years at F. Hoffmann-La Roche Ltd, he was responsible for the selection of the first T-channel blocker. He also participated in the characterization of renin inhibitors as well as several endothelin receptor antagonists such as bosentan and clazosentan. Overall, the group he was heading discovered seven compounds that entered clinical trials.

During his 25-year-career in cardiology, he has published widely in peer-reviewed medical and scientific journals. At the same time, his passion has remained unchanged: being involved as closely as possible in bringing innovative medicine to "his" patients. He has developed various, novel experimental models allowing the differentiation of these drugs, work honored with the 1997 Hoffmann-La Roche Research Prize. In 2007 he was nominated professor at the Collège de France in Paris, France (Chair of Technical Innovation).

At the end of 1997, Jean-Paul founded Actelion, together with his wife, Martine, and work colleagues and friends Walter Fischli and Thomas Widmann. First mainly focusing on Research and Development, he became CEO of the company to bring Actelion to the public in April 2000.

Andrew J. Oakley - Vice President, Chief Financial Officer, Member of the Actelion Executive Committee

Andrew J. Oakley, a citizen of both Australia and the United Kingdom, holds an MBA from London Business School. He has been a member of the Australian Institute of Chartered Accountants since 1987.

In his last position before joining Actelion, Andrew served in a senior finance capacity for the global holding companies of Accenture. In his career, he has also held executive positions in the finance departments of two major multinational building material companies. In addition, he also spent several years as an equity analyst with banks in Australia, the United Kingdom and the United States.

Andrew joined Actelion as Vice President, Chief Financial Officer in January 2003.

Simon Buckingham - President, Global Corporate and Business Development, Member of the Actelion Excecutive Committee

Simon Buckingham is a veterinarian by training; he also has a PhD and a Graduate in Management qualification.

Prior to joining Actelion he worked for F. Hoffmann-La Roche Ltd as a Global Project Director in cardiovascular drug development and held several positions in Roche’s Australian affiliate in sales and marketing Management. He also held positions of increasing importance in sales and marketing at Parke-Davis US and the pharmaceutical division of Warner Lambert where he was responsible for products over a range of therapeutic areas including cardiovascular, diabetes, antibiotics, depression and neurology.

Simon joined Actelion in 2000 and is currently President, Global Corporate and Business Development.

Otto Schwarz - President, Business Operations, Member of the Actelion Excecutive Committee

Otto Schwarz is an Austrian citizen with a PhD in pharmaceutical chemistry from Vienna University.

Prior to joining Actelion, he was Executive Vice-President Commercial Operations at Nycomed (former Altana Pharma AG) where he oversaw commercial operations in more than 40 countries. Previously, Otto worked for almost 20 years at Eli Lilly and Schering-Plough providing him with the opportunity to either lead or participate in major drug launches and major strategic alliances with third parties.

Otto joined Actelion as President, Business Operations and Executive Committee Member in 2008.

Isaac Kobrin - Senior Vice President, Chief Medical Officer, Member of the Actelion Executive Committee

Isaac Kobrin is an internist educated in Israel with further training (Fullbright Fellowship) at the Ochsner Medical Foundation in New Orleans, LA, USA, mainly in the cardiovascular and nephrology fields.

He joined the clinical cardiovascular development department at F. Hoffmann-La Roche Ltd in 1989. During his 10 years at Roche he was responsible for the worldwide clinical development of key compounds within the company's cardiovascular portfolio (from Phase 1 to marketing approval). In 1997 he became Group Leader of the cardiovascular development group. He is the author of more than 80 manuscripts and received the 1997 Hoffman-La Roche Research Prize.

Isaac joined Actelion in September 1999 as Senior Vice President, Head of Clinical Development, and became Chief Medical Officer (CMO) in July 2009.

Guy Braunstein - Senior Vice President, Head of Clinical Development, Member of the Actelion Executive Committee

Guy Braunstein is a French citizen with an MD and is specialized in respiratory medicine. He has a PhD in life science.

Guy joins Actelion from Merck Serono, where he was the Chief Medical Officer, having served for 4 years before that as Chief Medical Officer at Serono International. His more than 20 years in the pharmaceutical industry spans a wide range of experience from affiliate Medical Director and Global Medical Affairs through to Research and Development roles. Guy has worked in both large pharmaceutical and biotech environments in companies such as, Astra, Glaxo-Wellcome, GSK, Fisons, Rhône Poulenc Rorer and Chiron. During this time he built experience in multiple therapeutic areas, in particular respiratory, inflammation and autoimmune disorders, multiple sclerosis and oncology.

Guy joined Actelion in July 2009 as Head of Clinical Development.

Martine Clozel - Senior Vice President, Head of Drug Discovery Pharmacology and Pre- clinical Development, Chief Scientific Officer, Founder

Martine Clozel, a pediatrician specializing in neonatal intensive care, has an MD degree from Nancy University, France, and received further training in physiology and pharmacology from McGill University, Montreal, and the University of California, San Francisco.

During her 11 years at F. Hoffmann-La Roche Ltd, she initiated the research project on endothelin and endothelin receptor antagonists which led to the discovery and clinical development of bosentan (Tracleer®), tezosentan, clazosentan and other molecules. Her group has published over 130 peer-reviewed papers in the fields of endothelial function, endothelin and endothelin receptor antagonists. In 1997 she was awarded the Hoffmann-La Roche Research Prize for her achievements in the field of endothelin research.

In 1997 Martine co-founded Actelion Pharmaceuticals Ltd, where she is Senior Vice President, Head of Drug Discovery, Pharmacology & Preclinical Development. At the beginning of 2009, to further strengthen the medical perspective throughout Actelion's discovery process and to provide additional scientific input in the development process, Martine was nominated by the Board of Directors to additionally take on the role of Chief Scientific Officer (CSO).

Beat Steiner - Vice President, Head of Drug Discovery, Biology

Beat Steiner studied biochemistry/chemistry and obtained his PhD degree at the University of Berne. During his postdoctoral education he received further training in molecular biology and pharmacology from the University of California in San Francisco.

During his almost 20 years at Roche Basel, he initiated the research project on platelet integrin receptor antagonists, which led to the discovery and clinical development of lamifiban and sibrafiban. He was leading a drug discovery group in the field of thrombosis and atherosclerosis resulting in the selection of several additional compounds for clinical development.

In 2003 Beat joined the drug discovery unit at Actelion Pharmaceuticals Ltd, where he is now Head of Drug Discovery, Biology.

Thomas Weller - Vice President, Head of Drug Discovery, Chemistry

Thomas Weller studied chemistry at the ETH Zurich and completed his PhD thesis under Professor D. Seebach with further training at Columbia University New York under Professor G. Stork.

He spent 16 years in the drug discovery unit at F. Hoffmann-La Roche Ltd as group leader and later on as area head of chemistry in thrombosis and arteriosclerosis. His projects included the isolation of active principles from fermentation broths, medicinal chemistry on PAF antagonists, thrombin inhibitors, vitronectin receptor antagonists and oxidosqualene cyclase inhibitors. In the field of fibrinogen receptor antagonists two of his molecules, lamifiban and sibrafiban, were among the most advanced of their class and progressed through clinical development up to Phase 3 trials.

In 2000 Thomas joined Actelion Pharmaceuticals Ltd, where he is currently Vice President, Head of Drug Discovery, Chemistry.

Roland Haefeli - Vice President, Head of Investor Relations and Public Affairs, Member of the Actelion Executive Committee

Roland Haefeli, a historian and political economist with advanced degrees from the University of Bern (Switzerland) and UNC Chapel Hill (USA), started his career in the pharmaceutical industry as a corporate spokesperson for Roche.

He also worked as head of media relations for other companies, including Serono. In his early career, a stock market training program in a Swiss Private Bank was followed by several years as a news writer, presenter, and editor for several print and electronic media operations. He also served two years as a Delegate for the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) in Bosnia and Rwanda.

Roland joined Actelion as its Vice President, Head of Investor Relations & Public Affairs in 2001.

Louis de Lassence - Vice President, Head of Corporate Services, Member of the Actelion Executive Committee

After graduating from a business school in Paris in 1976, Louis de Lassence worked as an external auditor and obtained degrees in Accounting.
 
From 1982, Louis spent 18 years with F. Hoffmann-La Roche Ltd, where he gained a very broad experience in Finance and Administration. There, his last positions were finance manager in Brussels, assistant to the vice-chairman of the group and finally finance manager of Pharma International, the department in charge of the pharmaceutical sales in Central and Eastern Europe, Africa, the Middle-East and Central- and Near-Asia. In this capacity he had exposure to a large range of international responsibilities and experiences covering numerous activities in pharmaceuticals as well as in the vitamins and flavors and fragrances.

Louis joined Actelion Pharmaceuticals Ltd in 1999, where he is currently Vice President, Head of Corporate Services.

Marian Borovsky - Vice President, General Counsel, and Secretary of the Board

Marian Borovsky earned his JD from the University of Basel, and has been admitted to the Bar.

He started his professional career as an attorney at law with an insurance company and subsequently worked as a legal and tax adviser for an international audit and consulting firm. During this time, he also acted as a lecturer for commercial law for prospective auditors and accountants. In addition, he completed a secondment to an international business law firm in London and is a qualified business mediator.

Marian joined Actelion as its Vice President, General Counsel in 2000, taking on responsibility for all the legal, intellectual property, and insurance issues of the Actelion group. In addition to his position as General Counsel, he was nominated Corporate Secretary to the Board of Directors of Actelion Ltd in 2003.
